September 29-October 6 is Banned Books Week, and we are having a Harry Potter discussion session to celebrate. Come to the library from 4-4:45pm today, Tuesday October 2nd to talk about Harry!
Just to update everyone, here's what happened: We had several computers damaged in the storm by the electricity issues. We are working on fixing those. We had several issues with a new Microsoft Vista install that didn't go as smoothly as we would have liked. We also encountered some problems with the print management program that we installed.
So here's what the current status is: We are back to "old school" printing in the library. Except for one quad of computers (by the east windows) which we are using as a test, there is no more login required to print. You now can still select the color printer, from any computer, if you wish, and get the color prints at the circulation desk (after paying for them of course). There now 2 printers on the library floor (and two in the classroom). Your print jobs will either go to Printer A (closer to the Reference desk) or Printer B (in the middle of the floor).
We are still looking at implementing the printer control porgram at some point (possibly in Spring semester) so keep your Technology Account username and password handy.
We would like to thank everyone for their patience during this exciting (!) time. We're glad to be back to more-or-less normal operations.
Greetings everybody!
As the fall semester begins here at the Buehler Library, we have some changes in how printing will happen to let you know about.
When you want to print something from a library computer, you will be asked to log in to our new print management system, using your Elmhurst Technology Account log in (your email and password). You will be limited to jobs of 100 pages, and 35 copies of any given job.
Some things to keep in mind about printing under the new system:
--You will be asked to log in after you send the job to the printer (after you click "OK" or "Print" on the printer control screen
--You will need to be patient. It can take a little while (up to a minute) for the job to print once you have logged in and sent the job to the printer. Don't wait til the last minute to come to the library and print things out!
--You must have your EC Technology Account log in to print. If you don't use your EC email or don't remember the password you must go to Academic Computing and get that straightened out before you can print here.
--Color printing is more easily available (just select the COLOR PRINTER on the print control menu). Color copies will print out behind the Circulation desk and still cost 50 cents each.
--Computers upstairs and downstairs (except for the cluster) will no longer print. Also, as of right now there is no wireless printing in the library.
--As usual, if you need any help with the print management system, please ask a librarian for assistance. We are more than happy to help.
We have instituted this print management system to cut down on waste, and to forestall the need to charge for printing in the library. Please be patient as we all get used to the new system.
Thanks!
Summer advising and registration for new and transfer students is happening at the Buehler Library this summer. On selected dates (see the Library Hours page for more details) new students will be meeting with advisors, registering for classes and getting their Jaypasses on the lower level of the library.
As a heads-up, if you are used to using the lower level of the library for quiet study space, you may want to try out the upper level instead during these times.
And, if you are going to be in the library while our new students are here, don't forget to take a minute and welcome them to the EC community!
We won't be shaking the printer cartirdges as much, or refilling the paper. The phone and the IM won't be demanding attention at the same time. There will be students with research questions, and we will be happy to see them, but we will also have plenty of time to work on projects, read an article, straighten our offices.
It will be summer at the Buehler Library, summer at Elmhurst College.
We hope you all have a great summer, whatever your endeavors, whatever challenges you face. We hope you all come back in August refreshed and ready for a new academic year. We will be ready for you, with new resources, new things to show you and to teach you.
Have a great summer. Read a book. :D

Here is a scenario:
It's late at night. You are working on a rough draft of your psychology paper. You have three different articles open on your computer screen in front of you. You find a paragraph in each of the three that helps you make the point you want to make in your paper. You copy and paste those three paragraphs into your rough draft. You then realize it's 3am and you are done. You save and close your paper, and head for bed. Three days later, you get back to work on your paper--but you have forgotten which words on the page are yours, and which are from your sources. If you hand the paper in without going back and making sure you have attributed those other words to the authors, you are plagiarizing. When your professor catches it, you could fail the assignment--or worse.
Surprised? There are lots of ways to make citation mistakes while writing papers. It's important to learn the right ways to use other people's words or ideas in your work. Passing someone else's words off as your own--intentionally or not--is a form of stealing. There are tools you can use--like the highlighter function in Word, as an example--to help you remember which words are yours and which were written by others--but we all have a responsibility to make sure that if we use someone else's ideas we give then proper credit!
What do you all think?
We are trying a new format for the library blog. Livejournal allows us to have comments and conversations and arguments--whatever we would like!
So please chime in and say hi! Let us know what you would like to see here on our community--what topics should we discuss? What questions do you have? How can we help you use the library?
Anyone can comment here on our LJ--just please sign your name so we know who you are, and leave an email if you want us to respond privately! If you have a Livejournal, please friend us!
Thanks!
